A large boombox from 1981 with 8-inch woofers and very unique styling.

Sony CFS-77

The Sony CFS-77 was introduced in 1981. It measures 22-5/8" wide and 11-7/16" tall. It has 8", 4Ω woofers (they're actually 8.25" across the baskets), and 2" 4Ω tweeters. The amplifer chip is a Sanyo LA4125T.

It has a very unique and unconventional look. Since the top surface is sloped down towards the front, the big woofers fill up the entire front panel. There wasn't enough room to install tweeters in the usual places, so Sony decided to hang them in front of the woofers. They're mounted on beautiful chrome legs that remind me of the landing gear on spaceships in TV shows from the 60s and 70s.

Inside, it's typical high-quality Sony, with sturdy plastics, good finishes, and a weighted tuner. The wires are nice and thick, unlike the thin brittle wires in most Taiwanese boxes. But for a box with 8" woofers, the feature set is surprisingly limited. For example, it doesn't have bass and treble controls.....just a "Tone" knob. Regardless, this is a great-looking, high-quality box that belongs in any collection.
