The Sanyo M-9980 is a smallish-mid size model. Has a quality feel to it with some heft, an attractive dial that illuminates when the lamp button is depressed, or automatically whenever the unit is operated when powered by AC. Sound does not have much bass which is not suprising since the speakers are a bit on the small side so modern bassy music would sound as good but on the other hand, era appropriate music for the years this model was produced would sound perfect.

An interesting feature is that the antenna is mounted fore of the flip up handle. Although this does seem a little unorthodoxed in it's design and a case can be made that aesthetics might suffer a bit as a consequence, however this does make good practical sense since a sizeable percentage of broken boombox aerials might be attributed to accidentally raising the handle with the aeriels extended. Therefore, with antenas mounted where they could physically interfere with a mobile handle, one needs to excercise caution to ensure that antennas are either moved out of the way, or retracted and parked properly before lifting the handle on such models.
