Classic, high-quality boombox from 1979 with big VU meters and lots of metal trim.

Hitachi TRK-8180 and TRK-8181

One of the most classic-looking ghettoblasters ever designed. Tons of shiny chrome and aluminum. Lots of knobs and switches. Dual antennas. VU meters and tuning strength meter. DRPS (Digital Random Program Selection) tape song search. 6 inch woofers and 2 inch tweeters. It weighs 14.8 lbs (6.7 kg), not including batteries. It's from the year 1979, according to the service manual.

It was available in two colors. The most common one is dark gray (almost black) with bronze speaker rings. It's called the TRK-8180E, TRK-8180W, or TRK-8181H. A "Perdisco" version was sold in Japan with a wireless microphone capability. Then there's the rare TRK-8180EM, which is silver with silver speaker rings and chrome dust-caps. It is shown in the second photograph below.

This boombox often has problems with the function knob or the band selector knob. They sometimes stop moving, or fail to select the appropriate function. But it's easy to fix. There's a plastic lever inside that sometimes slips off its track. It rarely ever breaks, it just slips off its track. So just go inside and put it back. To do that, remove the rear case (9 screws).

If you need to fix the tape deck or clean the speakers, you will also need to remove the inner chassis that supports the tape deck. But that's easy. Just remove the knobs on top, press Eject, and then pull out the inner chassis from its bottom edge (you may need to disconnect some cables first). It will come out easily, because it is not held by any screws.
