Big 3-piece ghettoblaster with 2 very smooth tape decks and some fairly advanced features for 1982.

Philips D8734

The D8734 is a 3-piece ghettoblaster from Philips, a Dutch company, but it was actually made in Austria. It's from the year 1982, and it made a brief appearance in the James Bond movie "A View To A Kill". It has 2 tape decks with very smooth transport mechanisms. You can dub from Deck A to Deck B, or play both simultaneously, mixing their sound together using the Fader control. It also has a special headphone control that allows you to listen to a different audio source instead of the one that is already playing.

It is very large, measuring 77cm long, 30cm tall (35cm including the handle), and 18cm deep. It weighs 8.5 KG without batteries. The amplifier chip is a Matsushita AN7166, which is the same chip used in the Philips D8718. According to Matsushita, this amp can provide approximately 7.5 watts per channel when exposed to testing conditions of 16 volts, 4 ohms, 1kHz, and 10% distortion. The Philips catalog says 10 watts per channel, but that's just marketing. The speakers are identical to the ones in the D8614, D8634, and D8718. They sound good, but unfortunately they are made of thin, brittle plastic, so the sound has a bit of boxy hollow flavor in it. You could fix this by adding some Dynamat onto the inner walls, or maybe a fiber pad.
