Super Power Compo Soundmachine ghettoblaster from the 1980s

Philips D8644

The D8644, also called the Super Power Compo Soundmachine, was probably the biggest, heaviest, and most powerful Philips ghettoblaster during the 1980's. It goes loud and makes good bass. It measures 85cm long and weighs more than 11 kg. It has Line In and Line Out, Dolby, and a 5-band graphic EQ. The speakers are made of pressed-wood, which is better than the thin brittle plastic used on the D8734 and the D8718. They are styled to look like 3-way speakers, but they're not. If you pry the front cover off, you'll discover they're only 2-way. The woofers are code number W65538HFY25P-00, and the tweeters are T25178HPW13P-00. The tweeters are real cone tweeters, not cheap piezo tweeters like the ones used in most other Philips ghettoblasters. The amplifier consists of two Matsushita AN7166 chips. The D8734 and the D8718 only have one of those chips!

Warning: the gears inside the cassette deck often break, because they are made of cheap plastic. You may need to replace them. There is someone on Ebay named siliconemind who sells them.
