Very cool boombox from the late 1970's. It sounds VERY good!

Toshiba RT-8840S

The RT-8840 (also called BomBeat 14) was a mid-size ghettoblaster from Toshiba. It looks great, with nice brushed aluminum trim all over the controls, tuner, and tape door. It was built sometime during the late 1970's, because it appeared in the 1979 Greek advertisement shown below.

It measures 503 x 362 x 125 mm (with the handle up), and it weighs 5.8 KG without batteries. It has good build quality and nice-feeling controls. And it sounds excellent! It has good bass (more than the RT-8890S). And the treble is very nice too. The woofers are 15.5cm diameter, 5.2cm deep, and are labeled 2.5 Ohm, 6 watt. The tweeters are 5cm diameter and are labeled 8 Ohm, 3 watt. The amplifier chip is a Toshiba TA7214P. Interestingly, there is a sheet of foam behind the woofers, possibly in an attempt to produce warmer bass. Or maybe just to prevent wires from hitting the cones. Who knows?
