Huge ghettoblaster from 1981 with very good quality and sound. It looks great too!

Silver SR-8000L

The SR-8000 is a big 3-piece ghettoblaster from Silver. It is massive!! 79cm long, 28cm tall (not including the handle), and 19.5cm deep. The photo below shows the Silver compared to a Telefunken Studio 1. The Telefunken weighs 13.7 kg, while the Silver weighs "only" 10.3 kg. Both of them have dual antennas, which is nice because most 3-piece boomboxes have only one antenna. The Silver's antennas feature unique ball-shaped tips.

The controls feel nice, especially the volume knob. It has a very smooth, detented movement with 30 detents. And the tuner knob is flywheel-weighted. The tuner needle is lit by an LED. The "Graphic Equalizer" decal shown below was originally on the tape door, but the original owner moved it up. Personally I think it looks cool like that, so I'm leaving it there.

It is powered by two Fujitsu MB3730 amplifier chips. Silver says the output is 2x50 watts PMPO, or 2x24 watts "music power". The speakers say Model SX5A, 4 Ohms, 25W max power input. The woofer surrounds are tar-coated paper, instead of the foam commonly used by most 3-piece boomboxes. So the bass is tight, not sloppy. The woofers also have whizzer cones instead of dustcaps. Whizzer cones enhance mid/high frequency sound. Most 3-piece boomboxes have too much loose, sloppy bass, and not enough mids and treble. Not this one. It sounds very crisp and detailed, with very accurate stereo separation, and low background noise from the amplifier. It's great for any kind of guitar, classic rock, techno or electronic music. For modern 808 hiphop you should use something else.

It has a 5-band equalizer, Dolby, Metal and CrO2 tape, and a 4-band tuner. Plus the longest VU meters ever put on a 3-piece boombox! There is one strip of LED's for both left and right channels. They LOOK like they have 20 segments each, but they don't, they're just styled to look that way. They really only have 5 segments each. And unfortunately, the meters function only when the tape deck is running. So if you want the meters to function when the Tuner or Aux is being used, you will need to insert a blank tape and press Rec/Pause.

On the back, the Silver has a voltage selector for multiple countries. 110-127V, or 220-240V. Or you can use 10 D-cell batteries. Rated power consumption is 90 watts. The speaker cables have RCA-style connectors. There are also RCA inputs for Phono or Aux. The Silver's bottom surface is very smooth, and has 12 nice rubber feet.

NOTE: There is an upgraded version of this boombox with two tape decks, called the Silver SR-8800.
