Specs and Review of the Sanyo MX960 Big Ben boombox with its awesome 20CM Super Woofer

Sanyo M-X960

The M-X960 was the international export version of the Sanyo MR-X20 Big Ben. It has the same features and controls. It measures 607mm wide, 367 tall (handle down), and 221mm deep. It weighs about 21 lbs without batteries. It is a 5-speaker boombox, with 12cm full-range speakers, 5cm tweeters, and a 20cm "Super Woofer" sitting behind a removable grill. According to Sanyo, this Super Woofer is dedicated to bass frequencies below 300 Hz. Its volume can be adjusted with the Super Woofer knob located to the left of the Bass knob. The Super Woofer is powered by a Toshiba TA7205CAP amplifier, while the other 4 speakers are powered by a Sanyo LA4440 amplifier. Power output, according to the US service manual, is 38 watts "music power". But "music power" is higher than RMS. The Japanese catalog says the RMS output is 20W (10W to the Super Woofer and 10W to the other speakers).

I think it's one of the best-sounding boomboxes of the 80's. The bass goes deep, and the highs are really good too. The tape deck is good quality, its wow and flutter is only 0.055% WRMS, and its frequency response is 30 to 17,000 Hz when using Metal tape. Be careful when carrying or shipping this boombox, because the antennas and antenna clips are mounted pretty high, and can easily get broken off.
