Aiwa TPR-955

Aiwa TPR-955

The TPR-955H/TPR-955C boombox is from Aiwa's 1979 model year lineup. In Japan it was called the CS-80. It sounds fantastic, and it's one of the benchmarks for boombox sound quality. It measures 490x370x130mm, weighs 6.7kg without batteries, and has 16cm woofers and 5cm tweeters. According to the service manual, the minimum output is 2 watts per channel, and the maximum is 5 watts per channel. That might not sound like much, but remember that most companies lied and inflated their numbers. Trust me when I say this Aiwa really delivers in sound quality, and sounds better than most bigger models. The frequency response is very broad, and the clarity and detail is top-notch. The same is true for its brother the Aiwa TPR-950, which shares the same dimensions but is different in the following ways:

  • The 950 has gunmetal plate around the controls, the 955 has a silver plate instead.
  • The 950 has black rings around the woofers, the 955 rings are silver.
  • The 950 has black knobs and switches, the 955 are silver.
  • The 950 has a metal bar under the tape keys, the 955 does not.
  • The 950 has a dial light, the 955 does not.
  • The 955 adds a music search feature and a programable timer feature.
  • The 955 has Metal and Fe-CrO2 tape settings; the 950 just has CrO2.
  • The 955 is claimed to produce slightly more output power than the 950. I'm not sure if that's really true.
  • The 955 has slightly lower distorion in tape playback section.
  • The 955 recording bias frequency is slightly higher than the 950.
  • The 950 has slightly better FM stereo separation.
  • 955 has slightly better tape stereo separation.

Semiconductors:
